Proactively shaping appropriate behaviour
These techniques are actively trying to shape appropriate non-biting behaviour before it gets started by teaching a soft mouth and docility.
Desensitising your pup to body handling
The first thing is to desensitise your pup to body handling, so she is less reactive to handling.
○ Gently squeeze your pup’s paw, jaw, mouth, ears, neck, feet, tail and body.
○ Systematically start with one part, and work through all of the body parts.
○ Click and reward calm responses. (Because your hands are busy handling your pup, it can be helpful to initially do this with a friend helping. Keep the food reward close by.)
○ This is also helpful for when a vet will handle her.
○ Ideally, the breeder will have started this gently from 2 weeks of age, but make sure you are doing it as soon as you get the pup.
